Registration and Insurance for Personal Trainers in Australia
What personal trainers in Australia need to know about registration, certification and insurance before taking on clients.

Before you take on paying clients in Australia, it's worth knowing what's required and what clients and gyms expect. This guide covers the basics. Always confirm details with the official body, as rules change.
Registration
- Australia has no government licence for personal trainers. The industry standard is the Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321) to work as a gym instructor, and the Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221) to work as a personal trainer.
- AUSactive (formerly Fitness Australia) runs the main professional registration. Many gyms and insurers ask for it, and it requires ongoing CPD and a current CPR and first aid certificate.
Insurance
- Public liability and professional indemnity insurance are standard for independent trainers, and gyms and councils often ask for proof before you can train on their premises or in parks.
- Some councils require a permit for commercial fitness training in public parks. Check with your local council.
